Linux
A free operating system software, which is popular when running servers and in science labs.

Linux is an open source operating system, which means that the source code is free to change, if you have the knowledge.

Linux is based on the Unix operating system.

Mac OS X
The latest operating system created by Apple, for use on an Apple Mac.

It comes in two parts: Darwin, an open source Unix like environment, and Aqua, the more traditional graphic based interface.

Windows
An operating system for use on PCs, created by Microsoft. The latest general release is Vista, and is found pre-installed on most PCs. In fact, you're probably using it now.

The Windows name concerns all versions of the operating system, right from the first MS-DOS based system.

Vista is has just been released, and has been completely reworked and built from the ground-up. Windows XP remains popular.
